Many people wonder when the best time would be for them to start to repair their credit. If you have bad credit, then the time to start is NOW! You won’t gain a thing by putting this task off any longer. Actually, no time is a bad time for credit repair, but the earlier you start, the easier it will be.
Since it seems that almost everything we do today is tied in some way or another to our credit scores, it makes perfect sense to try and improve your credit as quickly as possible. However, credit repair is not something that can be done overnight. You didn’t spoil your credit overnight, and you certainly can’t fix it overnight! But, take heart. Repairing your credit is one of the best investments of time you will ever spend. You can improve your life and rid yourself of the worry of bill collectors calling your home and your mailbox being filled with bills.
If you decide to use a credit repair service, it will normally take anywhere from six to nine months for your credit to improve. Be careful in choosing these, as there are some out there that are rather shady. They will try to convince you that it is legal to do things like change a digit on your Social Security number to invent a new credit identity. This is fraud, and you could be prosecuted. Some will also tell you to just dispute every single thing on your credit report, which will not work. Definitely do not use a credit repair service which asks for money before they have even done anything to help you!
You can also contact your local Consumer Credit Counseling Service for free or for a small fee. They will counsel you as to what you need to do to improve your credit. Some will try to make payment plans with your different creditors for you. Their services are usually quite good, and you can’t beat the price, especially if you are short on funds.
Once you have everything squared away with the credit repair service or credit counseling service, remember to stay on top of your credit payments. One little late payment can undo months of credit repair. Also, do not apply for new credit at this time, as any applications will appear on your credit report and bump down your credit score.
The sooner you get started repairing your credit, the sooner you will have good credit again.
