Is It Time For Credit Counseling?
June 14, 2008 · Print This Article
There comes a time when we all need to swallow our pride and seek help. While such an action might not be that big of deal, say you need help moving a large couch; others are a little more serious. Credit problems are one of those issues that require help which can be of great embarrassment but of great aid as well.
You may think that recognizing a credit problem is easy and that you are not yet at that point. With some financial wizardry you are able to pay the bills, though some are late, avoid foreclosure, admittedly by the skin of your teeth, and afford groceries all while paying off one credit card with another credit card. This is by no means a situation that is under control. Take a time and look at your financial situation honestly. Are you sure you do not have a credit problem?
Some signs of a credit problem include, but are certainly not limited to:
- Money is always on your mind.
- Credit cards are used to buy groceries, pay bills, and are used beyond those “Just in case” situations you originally bought it for.
- You keep paying off one credit card’s balance with another credit card.
- Budgeting is not working.
- One illness or emergency and you will be financially ruined.
- You can not remember how large your debt is anymore.
Admitting that you have a credit problem is not an easy thing to do. It is embarrassing but it’s better to act sooner rather then later and seek credit repair options. Seeking assistance before your delicate house of cards collapses can prevent further embarrassment and pain.
Credit counseling is often your best bet when it comes to helping you with your credit problems. Theses professionals are trained experts and will be able to help you get your debt under control as well as assisting you to avoid future credit problems.
When you finally decide to seek the assistance of a credit counselor you will need to make sure they are reputable. The worst kind of help is the kind set out to take advantage of you.
Make sure your potential counselor is certified by the National Foundation of Credit Counselors. A certification from the Independent Association of Credit Counselors is also acceptable. Since you will be discussing private matters including social security numbers, bank accounts, credit cards, and the like make certain that the credit counselor has a good clean history by checking with the Better Business Bureau.
Now, before you rush out to find a counselor you may qualify for free assistance. It never hurts to look into federally funded programs designed towards those consumers in need of help. If you can not find such a program then find out how the counselor will be paid and how much it will be. This way you can find a credit counselor best suited to your current economic situation.
The bottom line is, do not be afraid to ask for help from a credit counselor. These professionals understand what a dire situation you are currently in and will strive to lessen your burden by imparting some practical wisdom and ageless advice. There is no need to feel ashamed about getting credit counseling, it is, after all, better then loosing your home.

It's not a mistake. Your mother used your SSN for her benefit. There's no way they can merge your credit report with your mother's. You have separate SSNs. Did you apply for credit with your mother? Probably not or you would not have posted this question.
The most reliable credit repair company is the one you see in the mirror. Most of what the credit repair companies do, you can do yourself. And YOU can guarantee that it gets done.
Here's what you must do. Some of it will be very tough. Get copies of your credit reports. Find out what is fraudulent. Then file a police report. Mom might get arrested on a criminal complaint. Then visit this site for more info. If you don't follow these procedures, your credit will remain in the pits because by default, you are admitting that the debts are legitimate and you owe the money.
