Consumers Voluntarily Giving Up Credit Cards

May 22, 2010 · Print This Article

Consumers are voluntarily giving up their credit cards in record numbers according to CreditCards.com. The company did a poll and found that one out of every ten Americans has either voluntarily closed their accounts or have lost the use of the credit cards for any of a number of reasons.

The poll covered the last eight months which was during the throes of the recession. The questions that were asked concerned interest rate changes, credit limit reductions or increases, and incentives offered by companies to convince consumers to close accounts. The changes made on credit cards included 42 percent of the consumers polled. Another way to state it is that 42 percent of consumers had a change made to their credit cards by the issuing company.

The most common change that occurred was an increase in the interest rates. The new Credit CARD Act set to become effective on 22-February-2010 spurred credit card companies to increase rates. The legislation limits when the credit card companies are allowed to raise interest rates though it does not place limits on the interest rates charged.

The CreditCard.com polls reported that 38 percent of credit card holders had their interest rates increased over the last 8 years. The consumer advocate organizations have been monitoring the actions of credit card companies and are appalled at the increases in rates being put in place ahead of the new legislated rules. Some have tried to get Congress to stop the lenders from making radical changes in card terms but to no avail.

Other changes that consumers experienced related to their credit card accounts include conversion from fixed interest rates to variable rates and changes in the limit amounts. A surprising result of the poll was that 30 percent of the credit cards experienced an increase in credit limits.

Americans are using credit cards less often. According to the Federal Reserve, Americans cut their credit card debt by $91 billion in 2009. With the high unemployment rates, consumer counselors have been advising households to cut back on their use of credit cards. It is tempting when money is tight to use a credit card to make purchases, but the increase in debt often comes back to haunt the household.

The question now is whether reductions in credit card use will endure as the economy improves. As consumers return to work over the coming months, the analysts will be watching the numbers closely to see if there has been a permanent change in attitudes towards debt. Americans are being encouraged to save more and use credit cards less and many hope the new lessons stick.

Ironically though, if the changes in behavior are enduring, there is a question about the influence the changes will have on the economy. The less consumers spend, the slower the economy will recover. The CreditCard.com poll surveyed 1,004 households with a margin of error that was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Of course; socialism will improve the lives of people all over the world, particularly Marxist socialism. One must start with the root problems of capitalism in order to understand this concept.

In the capitalist work force, Marx described the concept of alienation. Alienation occurs when workers do not own or use the products that they create, nor do they see the benefit of the products they create. A worker is treated like a tool by the capitalist to make more money, instead of as a human being. The worker may spend 8 hours a day creating new wealth, but most of that wealth goes to someone who did not perform the labor. Workers generally receive the same wage (minimum wage) for their labor, no matter how much wealth is produced. Why should a worker expend more effort if he is only going to receive the same wage as everyone else. In a Marxist society, the workers would own the means of production jointly. The workers would elect their bosses based upon ability and merit and everyone would share in the profits, with more money going to the people who worked harder and spent more time on their labor. Socialism does not simply give everyone an equal share, but actually enables workers to earn what they actually produce.

This concept of alienation is important when talking about crime. If individuals begin to see themselves and others as objects to be used to get rich, what stops a person from looking at someone else and saying, "wow, that guy has a really nice watch, I want." and then proceeded to rob the man with the watch. The robber views the victim, not as another person, but as an object standing in the way of getting rich.

The Marxist society also addresses democracy and reveals it as the dictatorship it truly is. In the United States, each election individuals go to the polls to chose the candidate that best misrepresents the people. There are usually only two choices: the Republican and the Democrat. Elected officials tell the people that they are free to elect anyone they choose, as long as it is a candidate from one of these two parties; otherwise, a person is throwing their vote away. The leaders in the United States have already been chosen by the government, not by the people, regardless of which party wins the election. The Democratic Party helps to ensure that the people stay in line, often claiming to be the party of the working class. However, Democrats spend more time campaigning for conservative votes, rather than taking the risk to reach out to truly left-wing voters. If the Democrats actually won an election with the support of socialist-minded people, the party would be forced to enact actually laws and regulations that would help the working class and ultimately take power away from the Democrats and other members of the wealthy minority. If the Democrats did not enact any new laws to help the working class, the Democrats would be exposed as the liars and traitors that they truly are. So how does the Marxist society address this? One has only to look to the Paris Commune of 1871 and Marx's book, "Civil War in France." The government body would be composed of elected officials, chosen by universal suffrage; this body would serve as both a legislative and executive body. More importantly, these officials could be removed at any time for failure to follow the will of the people. These officials would also receive the wages of the average worker in order to reduce opportunism and to ensure that government officials do not become out of touch with the average person. In the United States today, it is clear that many government officials resort to corruption, lies, and other immoral methods in order to stay in office. The position of "representative of the people" has become a career, instead of a duty, with perks and benefits that far exceed that of the average American. These officials all receive huge wages, health care and many other benefits which they routinely deny to the American people in the name of the "free market." With a government body that Marx describes, officials would be forced to listen to the needs of the people.

It is amazing how few people understand that many of the complaints of so-called "communism" are in fact true of capitalism. Many of the complaints of communism are either lies, or misconceptions based upon Stalinism or Maoism. It does not take a genius to see how Stalin and Mao betrayed Marxism (and you can see this for yourself by reading Leon Trotsky's Permanent Revolution and Revolution Betrayed). Here are a few of these misconceptions that many capitalists willingly ignore or refuse to research:
Capitalists claim they do not want the government involved in decisions about health care, and yet insurance companies make these personal choices, based on profit, for individuals every day,

“as regards to Catholicism what text are you referring to that implements pedophilia?” Catholic born and raised as I am I can answer that for you: none! The institution of the Catholic church has been complicit in an almighty, excuse the pun, cover up but the crimes of these priests are without doctrinal basis. In Islam on the other hand…..well how long do any of us have to do justice to many of its, ahem, less acceptable practices? The long and the short of it is that the Catholic church can easily recover from this, and it bloody better get its house in order, but as long as Mohammad remains the embodiment of the perfect man whose every action represents the ideal to strive for, well as long as that remains the case Muslims won’t be happy living in the land of the kuffar and non Muslims won’t be able to tolerate living in the land of the Muslim. A classic example of this I find in my own home city. Over here if you ask any local what a Malaysian looks like they’ll tell you they look identical to the Chinese. Why is that? That’s because any Malaysian Chinese, who can, jumps on any sort of visa they can get just so long as it gets them out of (moderate, or so we’re constantly told) Islamic Malaysia asap. Then again I suppose this is only chinese bigotry.

Spock is correct. Until your business has an established track record with vendors, time in business and how your business is formed, you will be held responsible for any credit your business receives.

An alternative is to check with the bank where you have your business checking account. They may give you a credit card that also has your business name on it to use for your business expenses. Understand, the bank will follow its policies on granting credit to you and yes, your credit report will be what they base your business credit limit on.

I don't. I'm all for alternative fuel sources. It won't end capitalism, but create more. What irks me is the government lies. "Cap and trade" is a scam designed by Obama, Fannie Mae(owns the patent on the system to trade CO2) Al Gore and Goldman-Sachs. They began the Chicago Climate Exchange in 2006 right before An Inconvenient Truth came out. You heard that, right? Obama set it all up, got the backing for it.
The government has been for years hiding alternative fuel sources and it makes no sense that libs demonize capitalism in support of a government that is in no way interested in saving the planet, but taxing the ef out of us. You want alternative energy sources. i suggest you look to the private sector. That is who will bring about this change, not the feds. The feds don't produce anything, but rely on our tax dollars for their very existence.
