How to Write A Credit Repair Letter

So you have ordered a copy of your credit report, and studied it carefully. You have found several errors in your report of charges that you did not make, and a credit card account that is still open after you requested it to be closed. What do you do now? You write a credit repair letter.

What is a credit repair letter? It is a letter that you write to the credit bureau to tell them that there is a mistake in your files that you would like to have corrected. It’s best to make sure that this letter looks and sounds as if it came from a consumer rather than a credit repair agency. You want to get across to the credit bureau that you are a consumer who is a little upset to find errors in a credit report that is supposed to be error-free, according to the law.

You’ll want to be sure to put the following information in the letter to make sure that the credit bureau can identify you, and will pull the correct file. Include your full name and address, your telephone numbers, your Social Security number, the account number and the name of the credit card or loan that has the wrong information listed, and a copy of any paperwork that you may have that will lend weight to your claim. A canceled check, a statement showing that a late payment that is listed on your credit report was paid on time, or any other similar information is perfect.

You will need to send a copy of your letter to all three of the credit bureaus. If the credit report that you ordered was sent to you by Equifax, then you will also need to contact TransUnion and Experian. These three credit bureaus do not share information with each other, but it’s a good idea to make sure they get a copy anyway just in case the error has appeared in the files of all three.

It’s a good idea to use Registered or Certified mail when you send these letters out. By using these, you will have proof of the date you mailed the letters. This can be important , for there is a law in place that says you must get a response from the credit bureau in 30 days, or the inaccurate items must be removed from your record.

Once the credit bureaus receive your letter, they will start an investigation. They will contact the company where the error originated from and ask them for proof that you owe this money. If proof is found, you will receive a letter telling you about it. If not, then you are in the clear!

Writing a credit repair letter is an easy way to make sure errors on your credit report are corrected.
