Trends of Declining Credit Card Mail Continue in 2008

The financial research organization Mintel Compremedia reports today that the amount of materials sent by credit card companies to customers and potential customers through the U.S. mail system has declined by 3% in 2008. This continues a decrease in credit card mail volume since the month of October, 2007. Indeed, since 2007, the total amount of material sent by credit card companies throught the U.S. mail has dropped by 19%-from 900 million documents sent through the mail in October 2007, to 729 million documents sent out in January of 2008. The upcoming presidential election is giving the credit card industry cause for concern. Industry thinkers are worried about the impact of democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s union with Delaware Sen. Joe Biden.
Over the course of his political career, Barack Obama has been a vocal antagonist of the credit card industry. During a June meeting, the candidate has been quoted as saying, “for too long, credit card companies have been using unfair and deceptive practices to trick Americans into signing agreements they can’t afford.” If Obama becomes president, he is likely to push for increased government regulation over the activities of credit card companies. New Credit Card Deal For Home Depot

Home Depot is America’s second biggest retail merchant, after Wal-Mart. It also boasts one of the most extensive consumer credit card programs of any US retailer. Recently, Home Depot renewed its agreement with New York financial giant Citigroup, Inc.
